Bread & Spread: The Survey

By Erica L. ’26 and Anna S. ’26

Have you ever wondered what Crystal’s most popular bread and spread combinations are? Whether it’s a simple piece of toast with butter or a wacky combination like Nutella and jam, nothing quite hits the spot like a slice of bread and spread. But with so many bread and spread options available, it can be difficult to find the combination that will satisfy your hunger.

In our survey, we included nine different types of bread: sourdough, cinnamon raisin, whole wheat, multigrain, white, square brioche, brioche, gluten-free bread, and bagels. Accompanying the bread, we listed the nine options for spreads: butter, cream cheese, strawberry jam, grape jam, peanut butter, Nutella, almond butter, and maple almond butter. Here are the results:

Favorite Bread: Sourdough
It was no surprise that sourdough bread emerged as the favorite bread among our respondents. The sourdough had the most common combination of sourdough and butter. Many students enjoy sourdough bread because of its chewy texture and crispness when toasted perfectly.

Runner-Up: Bagels
The bagels came in a close second only losing by 1%. The bagels, available on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, are always gone within a few minutes and with crowded toasters. The chewy texture and versatility of the bagel make it a beloved bread option. The most popular spread combination with bagels was cream cheese, however, many students also enjoy butter with their bagels.

Most Popular Spread: Butter
When it comes to spreads there was a clear winner: butter. Butter is a classic choice that is loved by many. It has a rich and creamy flavor which makes it a great option with all types of bread.

Not-So-Popular Options
While all bread was given love in our survey, gluten-free bread unfortunately was the only option that only received one vote. Additionally, the maple almond butter and grape jam were not very popular.

Overall, it was great to see the variety of preferences among Crystal students when it comes to breads and spreads.
