Can You Dig It?

By: Mina M. (’17)

When the volleyball preseason began, the varsity team needed six additional players for its twelve player team. Of the six returning players, two were setters, two were middles, and two were outsides. Quite simply, we had virtually no defensive players and were in dire need of talent from the incoming freshmen. When twenty freshmen arrived to tryouts, however, we knew that we would not be disappointed. And despite the low expectations that most had of our ability to be successful this year––after graduating some incredibly talented and experienced players last year––our team had an extremely successful season.

We started out the season very strong with five wins and just one loss in the preseason. King’s Academy has always been our toughest competition in league, and unfortunately, we were unable to pull out with a win against them; Mercy Burlingame also proved to be tough this year after moving down from the Foothill league. Regardless, we completed a successful campaign in league, securing wins against the likes of Woodside Priory, Pinewood, Castilleja, and Eastside College Prep. We also had some great wins against The Bay School, Urban High School, and Cappuccino in out of league competition.

On senior night, none of us knew if we would qualify for CCS, so we played like it was our last game. The crowd was amazing and undoubtedly helped solidify our 3-1 win over Pinewood, one of our rivals. Unfortunately, despite competing extremely well for the past three years in CCS, we did not qualify for playoffs this year. It all came down to our tie for first place in Division 5 with Castilleja, and because we split the series with them one to one––but Castilleja beat us in four sets while we beat them in five––a mere set bid our hopes of CCS goodbye. However, with such a young team, I’m amazed at how well we played and how much everyone was willing to step up. I’m truly going to miss my fellow lady Gryphons, but I’m confident that the freshmen are going to grow and eventually carry the team to more incredible seasons in the future!
